Alcudia's calendar year is packed with fiestas and religious celebrations. It starts off on the 5th of January with the traditional Three Kings celebrations, when the Three Kings arrive at the port to give presents to the children. January 16th-17th
Held in January every year, this is a celebration of Sant Antoni Abat, who was the patron of animals.
Huge fires are lit on the 16th and the traditional benediction of animals takes place on the 17th near the Parish church of Saint James.
Feb - Mar - Apr
Holy week (Semana Santa). Easter is one of the most important religious celebrations in Spain. In Alcudia they hold massive religious processions.
June 29th
During the month of the June the, the patron saint of the sailors, is held. It's a colourful sea procession with decorated boats. Many of the locals accompany the boats by going for a walk in the bay.
The week leading up to the procession is packed with all sorts of cultural activities.
July 1st - 2nd
At the beginning of July the Alcudians celebrate the popular "Mare de Déu de la Victòria". It takes place at the hermitage.
The night before they hold a typical dance called a "Ball de bot". There's also a concert from the local town orchestra.
On the day of the celebration, there's a mass followed by all sorts of games and races. Everyone joins in!
July 25th
This is one of Alcudia's most important celebrations. It's dedicated to their patron saint, "Saint James". It's a week-long celebration packed with concerts, open air dances, theatre, expositions and religious ceremonies.
July 26th
The procession of the Saint Christ takes place every three years. It's held in memory of the miracle that occurred in the year 1507 when Saint Christ began to sweat blood, ending a large period of drought.
August 24th
The festivity of the Chinese lanterns is a very colourful and lively celebration. All the young kids go through the streets carrying Chinese lanterns (made of melons) and singing old Mallorcan songs.
October
The Fira is a trade fair that takes place every year in the first week in October. There's every kind of product on display here; from agriculture, the arts and crafts, industry and from companies.
On the Saturday, a procession is held, where the Alcudian people carry figures of Mallorcan history through the streets of the town.
December
Christmas in Alcudia is a magical time. Midnight mass (on Christmas eve) is very popular, just like back home.
Then there's the competition of the nativity scene, other nativity competitions and the spectacular New Year celebrations. |
