Pollensa is a very peaceful old town located in the north east of Mallorca. Unlike many places on the island, it's been largely unaffected by tourism.

The town of Pollensa was set up a few miles inland to protect against pirate attacks. Only the harbour was left unprotected.

Nowadays, Puerto Pollensa has become a very popular family resort. Some of the highlights include; the medieval centre; and the main square, with the distinctive church of Nostra Senyora dels Àngels. This church looks fairly dull, even a bit austere, from the outside. But once you go inside, you'll be overwhelmed by the colourful and highly decorative interiors and a mass of blazing candles. It gets very packed, particularly on Sunday mornings for the week-end service.

Another place well worth checking out, especially on Sundays, is the main square. It's packed with small bars and cafes where the locals gather and chat. There's a busy market here, held every Sunday morning.

If you walk to the north of the square you'll come to the Via Crucis which literally means "Way of the Cross". This is a long stairway made out of stone and completely surrounded by ancient cypress trees. It's quite spectacular. At the end of the stairway you'll come to the famous statue of Mare de Déu del Peu de la Creu "Mother of God at the Foot of the Cross".

Just outside Pollensa, there's an idyllic monastery that dates back to the 18th century. This is a great place to spend some time by yourself or with the family. It's about an hour's walk from town.
