The ancient town of Alcudia is very very different to the modern tourist resort located 3kms to the south. Taking a stroll around this fascinating city is like taking a step back in time.

Alcudia has a fascinating and turbulent history. It has been occupied by the Phoenicians and Greeks as well as the Romans, Vandals and Moors.

The Romans made it their capital in the 2nd century BC. It was destroyed by the vandals in the 6th century and later rebuilt by the Moors. It was eventually liberated by King Jaime I in the 1200s. The Spanish fortified the city and guarded constantly against invasion.

The huge city walls of the old town date back to this period. Nowadays, you can enter the narrow winding streets of the old town by two gates. Both are guarded by large imposing towers.

Close to the old town, at Polentia, you'll find the Orator de Santa Anna. This is one of Mallorca's oldest churches. There's also a very well preserved Roman amphitheatre here.
